Creative Consultants gets a National Shout-Out!

29 10 2008

This is big news, everyone.

In the latest edition of PR Week, Creative Consultants is mentioned in an article about student-run public relations firms.

Our very own Kaitlyn Darr is quoted from the interview she had with the reporter.  PR Week is a national publication that most public relations, advertising, marketing and consulting firms subscribe to.  It’s a huge deal to be mentioned in a publication like this because of the expansive readership.

We know all of our Creative Consultants teams are doing fabulously, so keep up the good work!

Support our Creative Consultants Team! (and get some new shoes, too!)

20 10 2008

Tonight, Monday, October 20 at 8 p.m., our CC Cine team will be hosting the “Style your Sole Party and Movie Screening” at Cine.

Cine is showing the TOMS Shoes documentary For Tomorrow.  TOMS Shoes is an
innovative company that offers a unique product and the opportunity to help a
child in need.  During a trip to Argentina, the company’s founder, Blake
Mycoskie, realized how many children go without shoes.  He returned to the U.S.
with a plan for a new kind of business.

TOMS are canvas slip-on shoes modeled after the traditional Argentine
“alpargata”.  For every pair purchased, TOMS donates a pair to a child in need.
$42 covers a pair for you AND the pair for donation.  ”One for one.”

The Style Your Sole event, on October 20, will give you the opportunity to
purchase a pair of red, black or white TOMS.  You can choose to have your shoes
customized by local artists (including UGA students Missy Cargo, Amy Ishii,
Katie Osburn and popular Athens artist Jamie Calkin) or to customize them
yourself.

The 60-minute featured documentary highlights the founding of TOMS Shoes
and the first Shoe Drop to Argentina.

Admission is $1.  Despite the economy, I’m pretty sure you can pay a dollar.  Buying the shoes is optional!

I encourage ALL of you to drop by!  This is truly a great cause and a neat twist on philanthropy.  Take some pictures, too!  See you there!

Leave your Mark on Athens.

2 10 2008

Guys, girls.

While we’re here in Athens, we need to contribute to a community outside of the University.  Never volunteering in Athens would be like staying in a hotel and never picking up your towels, never organizing your suitcase, never saying hi to the maid in the hall, or never tipping the concierge.

If you think about it, the city of Athens is our host while we are here.  The least we can do is to give back to our community.

Athens-Clarke County is one of the poorest counties in the NATION.  Did you know that?

There are almost 70 registered non-profits in Athens-Clarke County who all need our help.

As public relations, speech communication, consumer journalism, newspaper, advertising or (insert major here) professionals, it’s our job to give back to the community we’ve called home for however many years.  I know a lot of us are already involved in community organizations.  If you are, comment on this post below, and tell us where you’re involved!

The opportunities are endless.  Mentor a kid. Serve dinner at the soup kitchen. Pick up trash. Hand out programs at the Morton Theatre performances. Teach disabled kids how to ride a horse.  There is something out there for everyone, and I think it’s in our nature to want to give back.

Maybe you’ve never had the opportunity to do so.  It is difficult to go seek out those organizations in need.  Now that I have some spare time, I plan on doing more community service with the Athens Area Homeless Shelter and the soup kitchen.  It’s fun!

Here’s the Web site you can go to to see all the registered non-profits in Athens-Clarke County.

Now, you may not think this has to do with public relations, but it most certainly does.  The purpose of public relations is to build mutually beneficial relationships between your organization (or yourself) and targeted publics.  Who knows?  You could meet someone who knows someone who’s aunt is looking for an intern!  The connections are endless, and the relationships built from this kind of service are lifelong.

Since our chapter has a service committee, look for updates on our upcoming service projects!  Let’s leave our mark on Athens, friends.
