Why Should You Join PRSSA?
There are many reasons why being a member of PRSSA can be beneficial for you. In addition to being a great resume builder, PRSSA presents networking and career opportunities to help you learn about the practice of public relations.
- Our meetings are held every other Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. Each meeting features a speaker who uses public relations every day. Some past guests have been Melissa Libby from Melissa Libby PR, Scott Williamson from The Coca-Cola Company, Lauren Jarrell from the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau, and Jill Krugman from Lockheed Martin.
- PRSSA members can only attend the meetings, but we do encourage them to join one of our committees. The publicity, service, meetings, PRofessional CONNECTION and mentoring committees are run by students, and PRSSA wouldn’t be what it is without their help.
- Every fall, we host PRofessional CONNECTION, a half-day of invited speakers who give short talks on different aspects of public relations. This seminar is widely popular among Grady students, but we also have students from consumer journalism and ag-business as well. Last year we had over 150 students attend! Don’t worry. You get excused from class.
- In addition to PRofessional CONNECTION, we also host a number of other special events. We take PRSSA field trips to PR agencies and tour around. We have a number of fund raisers for non-profits around the area. Last year, we had percentage nights at Raising Cane’s to raise money for Women to the World and the Tumornators.
Common PRSSA Myths:
- PRSSA is only for public relations majors. Absolutely not! PRSSA is beneficial for anyone who wants to learn about public speaking, how to talk to reporters (That can happen to anyone.), social media, event management, crisis communication and so much more! We have members whose majors are speech communication, journalism, ag-business, consumer journalism, advertising, telecommunications, marketing, economics, art history and many others. Don’t worry.
- You can only join your freshman year. That is totally false. Your PRSSA membership lasts one full year; it doesn’t matter when you join! Any student who wants to join CAN.
- You can only join in the fall. Again, false. Each fall and spring we have new membership drives. If you missed the window in the fall, come on in the spring! We have membership packets each semester that explain the dues and have the applications.
- PRSSA is only for girls. No, that is not true. We have plenty of guys in our chapter. Please don’t be intimidated.
